GOEDE HOOP ESTATE

Goede Hoop Wine Estate is situated off the old road between the towns of Stellenbosch and Kuils River, deep in the valley known as the Bottelary Kloof. The old farmhouse, rich in atmosphere, was built in 1880. In 1928 the Bestbier family purchased the wine estate and today Pieter Bestbier is a third generation winemaker on Goede Hoop.

OUR VINEYARDS

Every square metre of the 120 ha wine estate is situated on the slopes of the valley and about 80 ha have been planted with vines facing mainly north and north-west. Two hundred and fifty metres separate the lowest and highest vineyards and meso-climates abound as the temperatures and rainfall differences between these vineyards are considerable. Also the horseshoe-shaped vineyards ensure the right hours of sunshine for every variety. These conditions -the temperature, climate as well as quality of the soil – are ideal for producing wines of excellence.

On the crest of the hills are the weathered remains of granite outcrops. The surrounding soils are ideal for vineyard cultivation, especially red wine because the moisture-retaining sub-soils keep the wine roots cool, even in summer. The Goede Hoop vineyards have been planted here. Due to sufficient rainfall per annum, between 600 and 900mm, only 40ha receives supplementary irrigation since 2005.

VINTAGE WINES

For the past 40 years the Bestbier family has been collecting a selection of fine wines from the Cape. These wines have been stored and matured at optimal temperature in the cool cellars of Goede Hoop Estate. Now, 40 years later, whilst the Bestbier’s were on a European holiday in 2000, winemaker Albert Ahrens and then viticulturist Johan de Beer decided to bring to life, what was formerly old dusty, cobwebbed Sherry cement tanks, into what it is now, Pieter’s Private Cellar.

PRIVATE CELLAR

Pieter Bestbier, 3rd generation wine farmer at Goede Hoop Estate invites you to his Private Wine Cellar for a night of gourmet food and a selection of vintage wines ranging from the 1970’s.

What an amazing place. We were there for a cellar dinner and did this place impress. There are wines from 1976 and a briljant selection.

The host was fabulous and the knowledge of wines incredible. You get a 4 course meal, the food was delicious, and every couple, only 6 couples can go at a time, can pick a bottle of wine.

While you dine in the cellar you get to enjoy this fabulous wines and have a unforgettable dinner. I would recommend everyone to go and experience it. It is unbelievable!!

Just treat yourself and do this at least once (the private cellar evening).

Get 10 people together and spend an evening with the winemakers. You will probably leave there thinking you know nothing about wine anymore.

One of the most unique wine tastings I’ve ever had. Want to do this again.

Pieter, Johan and the family are very friendly and hospitable people. We hosted our tour group with 48 people there for an orchestra concert and then had a splendid braai and wine tasting in the cellar.

It was a very personal experience. We personally recommend their Estate Wine (Red) and the Sauvignon Blanc (2019) – these wines are really outstanding and a great representation for the Stellenbosch valley!
