    our

    WINES

    White Wines

Our crispy Sauvignon Blanc is made from a blend of both high and lower altitude vines to produce a premium quality wine with a subtle fusion of grassy and tropical flavours. The Chardonnay, produced from lower altitude vines for the best low yield and golden ripe grapes, provides a lingering fullness and lengthy palate.

    Red Wines

The youthful Domaine is an unwooded blend of cultivars and the full-bodied Pinotage is an expression of plums and blackberries. The first commercial planting of Pinotage in the world was in the Bottelary area.

    Our flagship

Cabernet Sauvignon comes from lower altitude vines to offer full flavours. Our Merlot is the product of deep, moisture-retaining Hutton soils. The fruity Shiraz, planted on an average altitude of 280m, creates a hint of spices. All our red wines are slowly fermented in open vats.

Our Approach to Making Icon Wines

Although we support our wine making with modern technology, we strive to stay as close as possible to Mother Nature. We are motivated by our passion for people, wine and nature. Taste our handcrafted wines and experience this passion

    about

    GOEDE HOOP ESTATE

Goede Hoop Wine Estate is situated off the old road between the towns of Stellenbosch and Kuils River, deep in the valley known as the Bottelary Kloof. The old farmhouse, rich in atmosphere, was built in 1880. In 1928 the Bestbier family purchased the wine estate and today Pieter Bestbier is a third generation winemaker on Goede Hoop.

    our

    Vineyards

Every square metre of the 120 ha wine estate is situated on the slopes of the valley and about 80 ha have been planted with vines facing mainly north and north-west. Two hundred and fifty metres separate the lowest and highest vineyards and meso-climates abound as the temperatures and rainfall differences between these vineyards are considerable. Also the horseshoe-shaped vineyards ensure the right hours of sunshine for every variety. These conditions -the temperature, climate as well as quality of the soil – are ideal for producing wines of excellence.

On the crest of the hills are the weathered remains of granite outcrops. The surrounding soils are ideal for vineyard cultivation, especially red wine because the moisture-retaining sub-soils keep the wine roots cool, even in summer. The Goede Hoop vineyards have been planted here. Due to sufficient rainfall per annum, between 600 and 900mm, only 40ha receives supplementary irrigation since 2005.

    VINTAGE WINES

For the past 40 years the Bestbier family has been collecting a selection of fine wines from the Cape.
These wines have been stored and matured at optimal temperature in the cool cellars of GOEDE HOOP Estate.
Now, 40 years later, whilst the Bestbier’s were on a European holiday in 2000, winemaker Albert Ahrens and then viticulturist Johan de Beer decided to bring to life, what was formerly old dusty, cobwebbed Sherry cement tanks, into what it is now : Pieter’s Private Cellar.

After completion winemakers from the Bottelary ward of Stellenbosch were asked to partake in the task of tasting and evaluating each of the +/- 100 different wines in Pieter’s Private Cellar.
They were pleased to learn that most of the wines matured to above expectation. To share these wines with fellow wine enthusiasts, Pieter has decided to open his Private Cellar door to the public once a month for a evening of Great Vintage Wine & Gourmet Food.
