Shiraz has a relatively recent history in South Africa that being said it is unclear exactly when Shiraz first arrived in the country. There are several theories ranging from Simon van der Stel bringing cuttings with him from Europe in the 1600’s to James Busby leaving cuttings in South Africa on his way to New Zeeland. The reality is that Shiraz had a very slow start in South Africa. The first real mention of the cultivar dating back to 1935 when 15 wines were entered into the Cape Agricultural wine competition. However, 12 of these wines were entered as sweet wines. The first single cultivar Shiraz was only bottled in 1957.
In the Bottelary region, which Goede Hoop calls home, Shiraz does exceptionally well. Producing some of the best examples of the cultivar in the world. The terroir simply compliments the cultivar in an extraordinary way. On the farm we use a combination of wine from old and young vineyards in order to showcase the best of what the farm has to offer.
The Goede Hoop Cellar, built in 1935, still uses its original cement tanks and “Kuipe” (Open top cement fermenters) to commercially produce all of our red wines. It has always been important to remain true to our roots, to produce smaller quantities of high-quality wine that celebrate this unique style of wine making.
The 2015 Shiraz has been barrel matured for 18 months in a combination of second and third fill barrels, for a softer wood extraction, then bottle matures for a further 4 years prior to release. As with all of our red wines in the Goede Hoop Range emphasis is put on creating wines that are ready to be enjoyed immediately but have the ability to be matured for another 5-15 years.
A beautiful full-bodied wine with typical spicy flavours complimented by dark berries. A wine that can handle any full flavoured dishes like rack of lamb, curry or a matured cheese platter.
